Liverpool vs Como: Gakpo and Jacquet Score in Friendly Victory
Liverpool achieved a pre-season victory over Como at Anfield on Sunday, with Cody Gakpo scoring his first goal of the campaign and debutant Jeremy Jacquet doubling the lead.
In the 23rd minute, Netherlands forward Cody Gakpo found the back of the net, slotting Jeremie Frimpong's clipped cross into the far corner against the Italian side. This marked Gakpo's initial goal of the pre-season, following his seven Premier League goals last season.
Just before halftime, Jeremy Jacquet extended Liverpool's advantage. He tapped in Gakpo's cross from inside the penalty area on the left flank, making it his first goal for the club.
Former Liverpool striker Neil Mellor lauded Gakpo's finish as "really good," noting the precision required given the ball's bounce. Mellor also praised Gakpo's unselfish play for the second goal, describing the assist as a "buffet ball" for his teammates, which Jacquet expertly converted.
The goals put new Reds head coach Andoni Iraola on track for his first win at Anfield in charge, following a previous defeat. Iraola's team had previously lost 3-2 to Monaco in his first home game on August 9th.
Gakpo's opener prevented a repeat of the earlier 0-0 draw between the two teams in a morning friendly. Frimpong's quick surge down the wing set up the goal.
While celebrating the win, Iraola will be mindful of Como's performance against Arsenal earlier in the week, where they drew 1-1 before losing on penalties.
Liverpool's competitive season is set to commence on August 23rd at Newcastle. Como, managed by former Premier League player Cesc Fabregas and having qualified for the Champions League, will begin their Serie A campaign a day earlier against Udinese.
