AFCON 2027: Nigeria's Humiliation and Ghana's Shock Defeat in Qualifiers

Nigeria's hopes for AFCON 2027 qualification took a major blow after a 3-0 loss to Guinea-Bissau. The Super Eagles, who missed the 2026 World Cup, fell behind early to a Franculino Dju strike. Mama Balde extended the lead, and Alvaro Djalo secured the win with a third goal in added time. Guinea-Bissau now leads Group L by three points, with only the group winner advancing.

Ghana faces a difficult path to the finals following a second consecutive loss. After a 2-0 defeat to Ivory Coast, the Black Stars lost 4-2 at home to Gambia. Ghana had led 2-0 through a penalty from Ernest Nuamah and a goal from Felix Afena-Gyan. However, Gambia mounted a comeback with goals from Muhammed Badamosi (penalty) and Omar Colley before halftime. Ebrima Colley then scored twice in stoppage time to seal the victory.

Ivory Coast secured a late 2-0 win against Somalia, with Yann Gboho scoring in the 89th minute and Bazoumana Toure adding a second in stoppage time.

Morocco maintained their perfect record in Group A with a 2-0 away win over Lesotho. Brahim Diaz and Azzedine Ounahi scored for the Atlas Lions.

Senegal earned their first win in Group J, a 1-0 away victory against Ethiopia, thanks to Nicolas Jackson assisting Ibrahim Mbaye's goal.

Egypt bounced back from their opening draw by defeating South Sudan 5-0, with Omar Marmoush scoring twice.

Cape Verde, who reached the World Cup knockout stages, are now without a point in Group K after a 2-1 home loss to Rwanda. Benchimol scored for Cape Verde, but Claude Niyomugabo and Elie Iradukunda Tatou secured the win for Rwanda.

Algeria drew 2-2 with Burundi after trailing by two goals. Cameroon salvaged a 1-1 draw against Congo with a second-half own goal.
