Chelsea 6-3 Leeds: Nine-Goal Thriller Sees Blues Fight Back

Chelsea produced a remarkable second-half comeback to beat Leeds 6-3 and advance to the fourth round of the EFL Cup, overturning a two-goal deficit at Stamford Bridge.

Leeds appeared to be in control for a significant portion of the first half, taking a deserved lead through Tarik Muharemovic. Their advantage was then doubled by Brenden Aaronson just three minutes after the interval.

However, Chelsea responded with an impressive five goals in the second half, with contributions from Cole Palmer, Pedro Neto, Danny Welbeck, and Valentin Barco.

Leeds initially took the lead from a set piece. Harry Wilson's delivery to the far post found Muharemovic, who managed to peel away from his marker and guide a looping header into the net.

Despite opportunities for Gittens, Barco, and Welbeck before halftime, Leeds held a well-earned 1-0 lead at the break.

In response, Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso made four substitutions at halftime, introducing Cole Palmer, Pedro Neto, Morgan Rogers, and Reece James.

Nevertheless, Leeds extended their lead just three minutes into the second half.

Ethan Ampadu beat Rogers down the right flank and delivered a pull-back from the byline. Lukas Nmecha skillfully flicked the ball into the path of Aaronson, who calmly slotted it into the bottom corner to make it 2-0.

Chelsea were awarded a penalty in the 52nd minute after a challenge involving Chavarria following a James delivery. Cole Palmer converted the spot-kick, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way.

Just two minutes later, Palmer equalized for Chelsea.

Morgan Rogers kept the attack alive before Palmer received the ball, took his time, and then curled a low shot around the Leeds defense into the bottom corner.

Chelsea completed their comeback in the 60th minute.

Palmer played a through ball into the box, Rogers got a touch to set up Neto, and the winger then curled a left-footed shot from the edge of the area into the bottom corner.

With the momentum firmly with Chelsea, Danny Welbeck extended their lead to 4-2 just five minutes later.

Rogers again provided the assist, racing past Muharemovic and pulling the ball back from the right. Welbeck executed a clever touch to evade two defenders before finishing past the goalkeeper.

Leeds, however, showed resilience and pulled a goal back in the 75th minute.

Noah Okafor drove into the box and squared the ball for Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who arrived to send a first-time finish under the goalkeeper, making the score 4-3.

Any hopes of another Leeds comeback were dashed by Valentin Barco five minutes from time.

Palmer won possession in midfield, leading to Rogers being released down the right. His cross flashed across goal, and after the goalkeeper failed to clear, Barco fired a left-footed finish into the far corner to restore Chelsea’s two-goal advantage.

Welbeck then sealed the scoring in stoppage time.

Barco’s attempted shot from the edge of the box was mishit, but the ball struck Welbeck’s head and looped over the goalkeeper to make the final score 6-3.
