Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, has officially declared its return to normal operations, more than a month after incidents of drug cartel violence impacted the region. Despite a lingering U.S. State Department Level 3 “Reconsider Travel” advisory for Jalisco, local tourism officials report a robust recovery and widespread normalcy.
Luis Villaseรฑor, CEO of the Puerto Vallarta Conventions & Visitors Bureau, confirmed that cruise ships and airlines have fully resumed service to the area. The region also experienced a significant influx of visitors from the U.S. and Canada during Spring Break, indicating strong tourist confidence. Villaseรฑor stated, “We’ve been actively collaborating with our travel partners to highlight the safety and appeal of this region.”
The State of Jalisco Tourism Office further confirms that all aspects of daily life and tourism infrastructure are operating at full capacity. This includes 100 percent mobility in the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area and Puerto Vallarta, normal functioning of public transportation, fully active taxi and ride-share services, regular tourist boat tours, and stable hotel operations. Restaurants, commercial establishments, and event venues are also fully operational, though some event dates may have been adjusted.
Beyond its vibrant city life, the area is home to some of Mexico’s premier golf courses, such as Vista Vallarta Club de Golf, featuring designs by legendary architects Jack Nicklaus and Tom Weiskopf. The Nicklaus course offers stunning marina views, while Weiskopf’s design challenges players with narrow fairways winding through dense jungle and deep ravines.
Looking ahead, many Puerto Vallarta hotels are seeing increased bookings for June’s World Cup matches in Guadalajara, which is just a short flight or a three-hour drive away. Other Mexican World Cup host cities, Mexico City and Monterrey, are also easily accessible, making Puerto Vallarta an ideal hub. Villaseรฑor expressed optimism that the World Cup will encourage more visitors to discover Jalisco and Puerto Vallarta, emphasizing the region’s excellent value, diverse year-round activities, and the genuine hospitality of its local residents.
