This year, the Golf Travel Writers of America (GTWA) announced a significant leadership transition, naming George McNeilly as its new president.
The GTWA serves as a professional organization for media specialists in golf travel, including writers, editors, broadcasters, and others dedicated to covering golf destinations and the wider golf sector. Its core objectives are to uphold journalistic excellence, foster knowledge exchange within the industry, and deliver trustworthy and compelling content about golf experiences globally.
McNeilly emphasized the unique value of independent media professionals, stating, “The credibility and authenticity offered by third-party working media members, who lack any personal stake in the success or failure of golf courses, resorts, or sporting events, far surpass that of press releases or agency-generated content.” He also stressed the importance for members to “honor the rich history and legacy of our organization.”
Established 21 years ago by co-founders Bruce Vittner and John Edwards, the GTWA began as a passion project, conceived to offer a dedicated platform for golf writers who travel.
McNeilly highlighted the evolving media environment: “The industry landscape is continually shifting, with many reputable storytellers, whether in media centers or on assignment, no longer being full-time staff.” He added, “I question whether businesses seeking publicity truly grasp the reductions in staffing and budgets at news organizations and adequately value the extensive reach and commitment of our members.”
Eligible media professionals gain significant advantages through membership, including access to a network of seasoned colleagues, avenues for cooperation, continuous professional growth, and enhanced recognition within a committed community passionate about their craft. Furthermore, it facilitates connections between writers and key industry stakeholders, tourism organizations, and various destinations.
McNeilly affirmed, “The GTWA is therefore an excellent platform for professional advancement, staying current with industry trends, and enhancing one’s standing within the golf media sector.” He likened the organization’s aspiration to a “Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval” for those who explore and report on the sport they all cherish, emphasizing that “Every interaction begins with a dialogue.”
The current organizational transition commenced with a review of its bylaws and the adoption of a concise, updated mission statement: “To ethically inform and engage golf enthusiasts and players, regardless of where the sport is enjoyed, observed, attended, documented, or experienced.”
While a proposal to rename the organization was put forth by some members, it was swiftly dismissed by the majority.
McNeilly commented, “Our fundamental activity will always involve writing, making the name Golf Travel Writers of America even more pertinent as we now reach broader audiences through novel platforms.”
Under the leadership of Alan Darty, the newly appointed vice president and publisher at Golf One Media, a team spearheaded the redesign of the association’s website. This initiative aims to better cater to the diverse needs of its expanded membership, which now encompasses broadcasters, podcasters, and influential figures aligned with the organization’s mission.
Darty described the revamped Golftravelwriters.com as “a comprehensive platform where golf-related businesses can explore the high-caliber work of our members and establish direct connections.”

Beyond McNeilly and Darty, the GTWA’s executive committee comprises Dan Vukelich as secretary, Joy Sarver as treasurer, and the article’s author serving as president emeritus. The organization’s main office is located in Orlando, Florida. Further details regarding the GTWA and membership can be found on its official website.
McNeilly’s extensive professional background is set to significantly benefit the GTWA. For the past fourteen years, he has lectured on Sports Business at Full Sail University, concurrently contributing regularly to publications on professional golf, associated destinations, and related products.
Prior to his academic and writing roles, he held a senior executive position at ESPN for over ten years. His career began as an acclaimed multimedia broadcaster, producer, and writer, with a portfolio that includes coverage of four Olympic Games across three continents, seventeen Super Bowls, and numerous major golf tournaments.
McNeilly articulated their dual aim: “We strive to be inclusive yet selective. Given the rise of multimedia contributors today, we must remain attuned to this shift. Our message is reaching wider audiences, creating numerous opportunities for our members to enrich the value provided to our audiences and stakeholders.”
