Mourinho Highlights Bernardo Silva's Need for Improved Fitness at Real Madrid
Jose Mourinho, the manager of Real Madrid, has expressed his concerns regarding the physical condition of new signing Bernardo Silva. Following the midfielder's debut in a friendly match, Mourinho stated that Silva returned for pre-season training in "poor physical shape" and needs to improve his fitness levels.
Bernardo Silva, who joined Real Madrid on a free transfer after his contract with Manchester City expired, made his first appearance for the Spanish club in their 2-1 friendly victory against Ferencvaros. Coming on as a substitute at halftime in Budapest, the Portugal international is still some way from being fully match-fit, according to Mourinho.
"Bernardo is a really important player for us, but the poor guy is another one who benefits from not doing anything when they’re on holiday," Mourinho commented. "It does him good during his time off to not do anything, so he’s come back in a poor physical shape – he has to improve."
Mourinho also elaborated on his decision to adjust Silva's position during the second half of the match, moving him further up the field due to concerns about his stamina. "Bernardo is a tremendous player," he added. "He can help us build up play if he plays deeper, as a No.6 or a No.8. But, during the game, I realised he was lacking a little physical strength, so I moved him forward to the No.10 position. He can play in three or four positions."
Madrid Secure Victory, But Work Remains
Goals from Mario Rivas and Carlos Espi secured the win for Real Madrid in Hungary, with Silva making his unofficial debut shortly after his arrival in the Spanish capital. The midfielder expressed his satisfaction with getting his first minutes on the field and believes he will be ready in time for Madrid's La Liga opener against Espanyol later this month.
Speaking to Real Madrid TV, Silva said, "It’s only the first week, but I’m very happy. There are still many things to improve, but the most important thing is to gain rhythm to start the season well. It’s been a tough first week, but I am very happy to have got going and made my debut for Madrid."
