Iga Swiatek Dominates Kostyuk in Toronto, Reclaiming Roland-Garros Momentum

Iga Swiatek, the No. 7 seed, has advanced to the quarter-finals of the National Bank Open in Toronto after a commanding 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory over Ukraine's Marta Kostyuk, seeded No. 10. This marked the first encounter between Swiatek and Kostyuk since the Ukrainian ended Swiatek's Roland-Garros title defense in May. In this rematch, Swiatek decisively turned the tables.

Despite a challenging first set where Swiatek won only one point on her own serve, she found her rhythm and went on to drop just three games in the remaining two sets. This crucial turnaround ended a seven-match losing streak for Swiatek in three-set matches against top-20 opponents. It also secured her fourth WTA 1000 quarter-final of the season and her second appearance in a Canadian quarter-final, her first since 2023.

The significance of this match was heightened by their previous meeting at Roland-Garros. In that round of 16 clash, Kostyuk defeated Swiatek 7-5, 6-1, marking the first set Swiatek had ever lost to her in four encounters and handing the four-time champion her earliest exit from the tournament in seven years.

When asked about her composure in this match compared to the tension she displayed in Paris, Swiatek attributed her success to a refined game rather than the circumstances. "I'm in a different place for sure," she stated. "I feel like I could play my game. I couldn't really do that at the French. So yeah, I knew what to do. I knew how to play. I just continued being focused and in the zone. Until the end, I was pretty confident with my game plan and with my strengths. I’m happy how I did that."

This victory further solidified Swiatek's impressive record at this level. She has now reached 29 out of 47 WTA 1000 quarter-finals, a 61.7 percent success rate that surpasses Serena Williams's 61.2 percent (30 of 49) as the best conversion rate since the format's introduction in 2009.

Swiatek's sharpness was evident from the start of the tournament. Following a week-long break in Greece after Wimbledon, during which she reportedly "didn't even think about tennis," she returned in top form. She had previously defeated Switzerland's Viktorija Golubic 6-2, 6-1 and Czech player Sara Bejlek 6-0, 6-3 earlier in the tournament.

Kostyuk, currently ranked No. 11, had reached the quarter-finals by defeating American Madison Keys, the No. 19 seed, 6-3, 6-1, and Canada's Katherine Sebov 7-6 (4), 6-0. Swiatek's next opponent will be the winner of the match between No. 3 seed Jessica Pegula of the USA and No. 15 seed Diana Shnaider of Russia.
