Darderi Reaches First Hard Court Masters 1000 Quarter-Final After Beating Borges
Italian Luciano Darderi, seeded No. 19, has advanced to his first Masters 1000 quarter-final on a hard court, defeating Portugal's Nuno Borges with a 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory at the National Bank Open presented by Rogers. Darderi, currently ranked No. 22, will next face either Arthur Rinderknech or Brandon Nakashima in the next round.
This victory marks the second time in recent weeks that Darderi has triumphed over Borges, having previously defeated him in the Bastad final in July. The win also represents Darderi's 30th match victory of the season, equalling his career-best tally from 2025 with considerable time left in the current season. Furthermore, he has become the first player on tour to reach 10 quarter-final appearances in 2026, surpassing Alexander Zverev, with whom he was previously tied at nine.
Darderi's successful run in Montreal mirrors the form that propelled him to his breakthrough at the Rome Masters in May, where he reached his first clay-court Masters 1000 quarter-final and semi-final, notably saving four match points against then-World No. 3 Zverev. In Montreal, Darderi defeated Juncheng Shang 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 and advanced due to Gabriel Diallo's retirement when trailing 6-4, 2-3.
Borges, ranked No. 49, was aiming for the most significant quarter-final of his career and sought to become only the third Portuguese man to reach the last eight of a Masters 1000 event. His path to the fourth round included victories over Yannick Hanfmann 6-4, 6-2, No. 26 seed Tomas Martin Etcheverry 6-4, 6-2, and Aleksandar Kovacevic 6-7 (7), 6-2, 6-4.
