Viktor Yanchuk: Medvedev Can Maintain a High Level for Several More Years

Sports news » Viktor Yanchuk: Medvedev Can Maintain a High Level for Several More Years

Renowned Russian coach Viktor Yanchuk commented on Daniil Medvedev’s defeat to Jaume Munar in the second round of the Miami Masters (2-6, 3-6).

Yanchuk stated that Medvedev’s loss to Munar wasn’t entirely unexpected. There were doubts about Medvedev being in peak form after some weaker performances. Unfortunately, these doubts were confirmed. Despite it being early in the season, Medvedev needs to recover, especially with the French Open approaching, which is a major and motivating challenge. He also expressed hope for the younger generation and suggested that Andrey Rublev might regain his top form after winning the tournament in Doha, which is a positive sign.

According to Yanchuk, Medvedev still has three to four years to compete at a good level. While Grand Slam titles might be challenging, he is capable of winning Masters events and other tournaments. Yanchuk addressed concerns about Medvedev’s career trajectory, stating that it’s a natural progression for athletes to eventually decline. However, he highlighted the example of Grigor Dimitrov, who is older than Medvedev and continues to compete effectively. Yanchuk concluded that a sportsman should keep playing and fighting as long as they can.
