Sheffield United delivered an emotional and heartfelt tribute to their former player and club legend, George Baldock, after successfully securing their place in the play-off final.
Chants of Baldock`s name resonated around Bramall Lane on Monday night, moments after the Blades completed a dominant 6-0 aggregate victory over Bristol City in the semi-finals.
George Baldock, a former right wing-back for the club, tragically passed away in October 2024 at the age of just 31 at his home in Athens, Greece. He had joined Greek side Panathinaikos FC the previous summer after dedicating seven years of his career to Sheffield United.
Reports indicated that his death was due to drowning in his swimming pool, and sadly, medical efforts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.
Following their decisive win and confirmation of their spot in the Wembley final on May 24, Baldock`s former club orchestrated a series of touching tributes in his memory.
Supporters throughout all sections of the stadium collectively rose to sing “Starman,” a popular chant based on David Bowie`s iconic song, which was originally created by fans to celebrate Baldock during his playing days at Bramall Lane.
Adding to the tribute, manager Chris Wilder`s squad paraded a Greek flag around the pitch after the final whistle, a poignant gesture in honour of Baldock and his recent club in Greece.
The flag prominently displayed the words “Star Man” and Baldock`s former shirt number, No. 2, written in bold letters.
Before the match commenced, a large tifo was unveiled over the home section of the stands. This impressive banner featured a picture of Baldock alongside the heartfelt message: “Once a Blade, always a Blade.”
Among the players seen carrying the Greek flag around the pitch at full-time was former Everton midfielder Tom Davies.
Sheffield United`s progression to the final was sealed with a commanding 3-0 win in the second leg at home, adding to their equally dominant 3-0 victory in the first leg away at Ashton Gate, resulting in the comprehensive 6-0 aggregate scoreline.
The Blades now await their opponent in the final, who will be the winner of the other semi-final tie between Sunderland and Coventry City. Sunderland currently holds a 2-1 advantage going into the second leg on Tuesday night.
Baldock was a familiar and respected figure in English football, having made over 400 senior appearances throughout his career. He spent seven dedicated seasons at Bramall Lane, becoming a key player and fan favourite.
During his time with Sheffield United, he made 219 appearances across all competitions, playing a crucial role in the club`s two recent promotions to the Premier League in 2019 and again in 2023.
The circumstances surrounding Baldock`s death were investigated after his partner, who was in the UK at the time, reportedly raised concerns when she was unable to reach him by phone.
His family released a deeply moving tribute statement at the time of his passing, which read: “You were the most special father, fiancé, son, brother, uncle, friend, teammate and person. Your enthusiasm and infectious personality brought so much love to those that were fortunate enough to know you and those that adored you from the stands.”
