
All football matches in Italy have been postponed due to the passing of Pope Francis.
Serie A officially announced the postponement of all top league games scheduled for Easter Monday.
The Vatican confirmed on Monday morning that Pope Francis passed away at the age of 88.
Four Serie A matches were scheduled for today, starting with Torino against Udinese at 11:30 UK time.
A league statement released shortly after the announcement stated the postponement of today`s Serie A and Primavera 1 league games.
The date for the rescheduled matches will be announced later.
Other Serie A games affected include Cagliari versus Fiorentina, Genoa versus Lazio, and Parma versus Juventus.
Three matches in Primavera 1, Italy`s youth league, were also postponed.
It is not yet known when the postponed games will be played.
Pope Francis had a history of chronic lung disease and had a part of his lung removed at a young age.
He was hospitalized on February 14 for a respiratory issue that developed into double pneumonia.
He had been in hospital for 38 days. Just the day before his death, he appeared on Easter Sunday to bless people in St Peter`s Square from the Popemobile.
The Vatican`s statement on Pope Francis’s death mentioned his passing at 7:35 this morning (local time).
The statement also noted that his entire life was dedicated to serving God and the Church.
