Sports news ยป Salford City Releases 17 Players After Beckham & Neville Takeover

Salford City has announced the release of 17 first-team players. This significant squad clear-out comes just days after Manchester United legends David Beckham and Gary Neville completed their full takeover of the League Two club.

Neville was already part of a group that acquired the club in 2014, alongside former Manchester United teammates Nicky Butt, Ryan Giggs, Phil Neville, and Paul Scholes. However, Beckham has now joined Gary Neville as the primary owners, with the other ex-players stepping down from their ownership roles.

With a new leadership structure in place behind the scenes, the club has quickly moved to make changes on the playing roster following an eighth-place finish in League Two this season.

Among the players departing is midfielder Matthew Lund, who joined the club in 2021 and made 120 league appearances. The veteran player had also been serving in a player-coach capacity since October.

Other key players leaving upon the expiry of their contracts include Conor McAleny, Liam Shephard, and Ryan Watson.

However, some players will be staying. Midfielder Ossama Ashley, who was named Supporters` Player of the Year, remains with the club. Contracts have also been extended for former Portsmouth player Haji Mnoga and ex-Everton prospect Luke Garbutt.
