Veteran mixed martial artist Yoel Romero recently offered his perspective on the potential move of former UFC featherweight champion Ilia Topuria up to the lightweight division.
In a podcast appearance, Romero stated, “Topuria was very strong at featherweight, and in the lightweight division, he will be practically unbeatable.” He elaborated on his reasoning, citing Topuria`s significant weight cut from his off-season weight (mentioned as 82 kg) to the 66 kg featherweight limit. Romero suggested that Topuria`s ability to perform effectively after such a cut means he will be exceptionally formidable at 70 kg, retaining his speed, reaction, and endurance. “The time has come for Ilia. He is someone who will be very difficult to defeat in lightweight,” Romero added.
Separately, reports last week indicated that Topuria has begun a training camp. Rumors suggest he is expected to compete at UFC 317, reportedly scheduled for late June in Las Vegas.
