Former doubles world number one Rennae Stubbs has voiced her opinion that Alexander Zverev`s current ranking is too high, stating he does not merit being the world number two.
Speaking on her podcast, Stubbs expressed her confusion about Zverev`s ranking, particularly seeing him seeded second in Rome. “I don`t understand his ranking. I hope this changes before `Roland Garros`, because he doesn`t deserve to be world number two. He hasn`t proven himself in tournaments; his loss [to Francisco Cerundolo] in Madrid… That shouldn`t happen. It`s hard to watch.”
Stubbs further elaborated on the distinction between winning matches consistently and securing victories in decisive encounters. “It`s impossible to climb so high without many wins, but there`s a difference between consistent wins and wins in decisive matches.” She noted Zverev`s position in the draw in Rome, sharing a half with Carlos Alcaraz, and suggested that a strong performance against top players would be necessary to validate his ranking. “Alcaraz is in the same half of the draw. If he beats Carlos, if he reaches the final or wins in Rome, that will be completely different.”
