Andre Onana received sharp criticism from Manchester United icon Nemanja Matic before the Red Devils` Europa League match against Lyon.
Matic, a 36-year-old former Serbian international now playing for the French team, spent five years at United from 2017 to 2022.
He was not impressed by the Man Utd goalkeeper`s pre-match statements.
Onana had confidently declared, “I believe we are the superior team, and we need to demonstrate our quality on the field.
“If we approach the game with a winning attitude, maintain focus, stay organized, and adhere to our strategy, victory will be ours.
“While we are familiar with some of their players, our primary focus should be on our own game and execution,” he added.
However, Matic delivered a strong rebuttal.
The Premier League title winner with Chelsea responded, “To make such bold claims, you must back them up.
“Onana? While I respect every player, uttering such statements necessitates delivering results.”
“If a legend like David de Gea, Peter Schmeichel, or Van der Sar had voiced those words, I would reconsider my own performance.
“However, if you are statistically one of the least effective goalkeepers in Manchester United`s modern era, you must first prove your worth on the pitch before making such pronouncements.”
Matic also reflected on the contrasting atmospheres at Chelsea, where he secured two Premier League titles, and Man Utd, where he didn`t win any silverware.
In an interview with The Athletic, the midfielder stated, “The key difference I observed after leaving Chelsea was the unwavering emphasis on results and trophy wins.
“This winning mentality permeated every aspect of Chelsea, starting from the ground staff. Roman Abramovich`s sole concern was the team`s performance and achievements.
“In contrast, United seemed to prioritize commercial interests. This became apparent within my initial months at the club.
“I joined United driven by the same hunger for trophies I had at Chelsea. However, gradually, I sensed a shift in focus, where winning trophies was no longer the primary objective.
“I recognize the importance of financial stability, but it felt like results were secondary to commercial aspects at United.
“During my time at Chelsea, I participated in perhaps two commercial engagements, whereas at United, such commitments were considerably more frequent.”
