Manchester United are reportedly nearing their first significant acquisition of the summer transfer window, with Wolves forward Matheus Cunha expected to join. This move is seen as part of a major squad overhaul under Ruben Amorim, following the Red Devils` disappointing Premier League campaign.
Sources like Sky Sports indicate that United`s transfer officials plan to activate the £62.5 million release clause for the 25-year-old Cunha once the current season concludes next week. While direct contact with Wolves is yet to be made, these formal steps are expected soon, as United understands the requirements to trigger the clause.
Cunha enjoyed a productive season for Wolves, netting 17 goals and providing six assists in 34 appearances across all competitions. This strong performance attracted interest from numerous top clubs. However, Cunha`s preference is reportedly to join Manchester United, with personal terms largely agreed upon. His goal tally for the season is second only to United`s captain, Bruno Fernandes, who registered 19 goals and 19 assists.
In comparison, only three other United players – Alejandro Garnacho, Rasmus Hojlund, and Amad Diallo – reached double figures for goals this season. Notably, Amad achieved this despite playing significantly fewer games than the others.
Interestingly, Cunha was observed in conversation with Amorim during their recent encounter at Old Trafford last month.
Cunha appears to be the primary target for United`s hierarchy, who are keen to significantly strengthen their attacking lineup following a season marked by a historically poor goal return from the club`s forwards.
Manchester United are also reportedly considering other attacking options. Ipswich Town`s Liam Delap is mentioned as a potential target, possibly available for £30 million due to a relegation clause. Other forwards linked with a move to Old Trafford include Viktor Gyokeres, Benjamin Sesko, Jean-Philippe Mateta, Bryan Mbeumo, and Moise Kean.
Beyond reinforcing the attack, the club`s reported transfer priorities also encompass signing new centre-backs, a goalkeeper, and central midfielders.
