Despite some shaky performances, goalkeeper Andre Onana is likely to remain Manchester United`s number one, not by choice, but due to other pressing team needs.
New manager Ruben Amorim had initially considered bringing in a new goalkeeper this summer following a series of noticeable errors from Onana.
However, the amount of money Amorim has to spend on transfers will depend on player sales. Without significant departures, he needs to address more critical areas within the team before considering a goalkeeper change.
At the top of his list is a high-quality striker. He is also targeting a central defender, a left-back, and at least one additional midfielder, making replacing Onana, who is 29, a lower priority.
Amorim had expressed interest in Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa, 25, but the £63 million release clause was too expensive, potentially opening the door for Manchester City to make a move.
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is reportedly interested due to uncertainties surrounding Ederson and backup goalkeeper Stefan Ortega`s future at the club.
Onana had previously attracted attention from Saudi Pro League clubs, and sources suggest Manchester United would consider offers around £20 million. However, this interest seems to have waned.
The Cameroonian goalkeeper was benched for the recent game against Newcastle after further errors in a 2-2 Europa League draw against Lyon.
Despite being dropped, Onana returned for the Europa League quarter-final second leg. Although he conceded four goals in a dramatic 5-4 victory for United, he also made several important saves.
Since joining from Inter Milan in July 2023 for an initial £43.8 million, Onana has conceded 99 goals in just 69 Premier League appearances. Nevertheless, he is determined to prove his worth at Manchester United.
Unless there are significant player sales, Amorim is expected to focus on strengthening other areas first, particularly the attack.
Rasmus Hojlund`s form has been disappointing, scoring only one goal for United since December. While Joshua Zirkzee has shown glimpses of potential, they have been infrequent, and he is currently injured.
Manager Amorim also believes the team needs strengthening in midfield and central defense.
Despite Luke Shaw`s return providing some relief at left-back, his history of injuries means Amorim desires another dependable, first-team-ready player in that position.
