UFC Lightweight Champion Islam Makhachev has identified two specific fighters he would be eager to face should he make the move to the welterweight division (170 lbs).
Makhachev, who currently reigns over the 155-pound division, acknowledged the evolving landscape of the 170-pound class, noting the arrival of several new competitors.
While discussing the possibility of a future matchup with top contender Shavkat Rakhmonov, Makhachev expressed willingness but doubted the timing:
“If Shavkat returns, I don’t think anyone will give him a title shot right now, but if they do — no problem at all. There are many fighters in the welterweight division now, the division has changed, many new names have appeared.”
The champion then focused on specific, highly viable contenders, prioritizing prospects who maintain clean records and established veterans who are performing well.
He highlighted the undefeated Michael Morales as a compelling challenge:
“Morales would be a good opponent because he is undefeated.”
Ultimately, when asked to specify his top current choices for a welterweight clash, Makhachev provided two clear names: the undefeated prospect and a former dominant champion.
“If choosing — it could be Michael Morales or Kamaru Usman, who are doing well at the moment,” Makhachev concluded.
