Veteran American mixed martial artist Demetrious Johnson has stated that he believes the current best fighter in the UFC, irrespective of weight divisions, is Islam Makhachev, the Dagestani lightweight champion.

Johnson was quoted by MMA Junkie saying: “Right now, Islam Makhachev is the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. He is proficient in striking, wrestling, judo, and jiu-jitsu. He also demonstrates the ability to overcome difficulties. Makhachev is number one. Jon Jones is right behind him, as he also possesses a versatile skillset, has faced challenges, and has competed against top-level opponents for a long duration.”

It is worth noting that Makhachev defended his title for the fourth time in January, securing a first-round finish against Renato Moicano.
