The world`s number one Italian tennis player, Jannik Sinner, has shared his views on leading the global rankings despite being sidelined for three months.
– Were you surprised that your leadership in the rankings remained almost unchanged despite the suspension?
– My answer remains the same as before: I cannot control how others play, even if I were playing. Ultimately, it`s just points. We acknowledge that the ranking is important, but it`s a slightly different matter. A new generation is emerging, Djokovic continues to reach finals or win tournaments, but these are things beyond my control.
– Zverev and Alcaraz had a great opportunity when you stopped, but it seemed like they felt your pressure from afar…
– Matches should never be taken for granted, even if you are playing against someone ranked 100th or 150th in the world. They are all intense if you are not 100%. Perhaps they are going through difficult times off the court, we can`t know. Many things can bother you when you step onto the court, maybe it`s pressure or being number one, or maybe family issues. Of course, everything can change very quickly, now there is a change of surface with Monte Carlo and clay, where Alcaraz will be the favorite. As for Zverev, he could have become first, having played excellently some time ago at Roland Garros. We`ll see how it goes, – said Sinner.
