Holger Rune: Coaching Changes Derailed Me, But I’m Back on Track

Sports news » Holger Rune: Coaching Changes Derailed Me, But I’m Back on Track

Danish tennis player Holger Rune discussed his recent performance and his ambition to climb back to the top of the rankings.

When asked about his drop from world No. 4 to No. 13, Rune admitted that inconsistent coaching decisions had negatively impacted his game. “The ranking reflects your current level,” Rune stated. “I made mistakes, frequently changing coaches. However, I now have a clearer understanding of my approach, my positioning on the court, and my physical condition.”

Addressing whether he had become overconfident, Rune explained, “The changes threw me off course, and I became confused. But now I`m back on the right path. To be at the very top, you need to be precise in everything you do and avoid complacency.”

Rune acknowledged the rise of Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, as well as emerging talents like Jakub Mensik and Arthur Fils. “Sinner and Alcaraz are already elite players, not just future stars. I`ve played against them and believe I can compete at their level. Sinner is incredibly consistent, and Carlos is too, despite some criticism after losses. He`s two years younger than Sinner but already has four Grand Slam titles – one more. Everyone can lose; we are human. Carlos deserves respect.”

Reflecting on his childhood dreams, Rune said, “As a child, I dreamed of becoming number one, and by 21, I reached number four. Did my dream come true even a little? No. I achieved intermediate goals: winning junior Roland Garros and being the top junior. But that`s not the main thing. My real goal is still ahead.”

When asked about his ultimate goal, Rune confidently declared, “To win a Grand Slam and become world number one. The most important thing is to keep dreaming.”
