Lineker will continue to cover FA Cup matches and the 2026 World Cup for the BBC before his retirement.

Over his 26 years hosting Match of the Day, the former striker has collaborated with numerous top football experts.

When asked about his favorite, Lineker joked to FourFourTwo, “I don’t like any of the others… that’s a joke.”

He continued, “I’ll miss Danny Murphy, a truly underrated pundit, analytically astute, and always a pleasure to be around.”

Lineker clarified that Alan Shearer and Micah Richards were not in contention as he will still be working with them on their Rest Is Football Podcast.

Former England midfielder Murphy began his appearances on Match of the Day in August 2013, subsequent to his retirement from professional football.

Murphy`s broadcasting experience also includes radio, where he is a regular contributor to BBC 5Live and talkSPORT.

Lineker’s successor as Match of the Day host was announced in January.

The BBC has announced that Mark Chapman, Gabby Logan, and Kelly Cates will share the hosting duties on a rotational basis.

Questioned on the necessity of a trio, Lineker explained, “That’s probably because it’s a significant commitment.”

“These three all have families, and committing to the role for the next decade or two means sacrificing weekends.”

“That could be the reason, I’m not sure. I wasn’t involved in those decisions.”

“I consider it a compliment that they`ve appointed three individuals, though I suspect that`s not the primary reason.”

“I haven’t had the chance to speak with them yet, but I intend to.”

“They will be excellent and perform admirably. I`ve known them all for years, and they are all outstanding presenters.”
