Italian tennis player Fabio Fognini, who recently announced his retirement from the sport, has spoken about his final career match.
This match was a five-set defeat against Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz in the first round of Wimbledon. Fognini was overcome in a lengthy battle.
“Before the match against Alcaraz, I was thinking about how to simply enjoy being on the court and play my best tennis. I believe everything went perfectly precisely because I managed to think like that. It helped me give my maximum effort,” Fognini stated.
“In recent years, I`ve dealt with many injuries. But I always tried to give my all, even though it`s not easy after the age of 35,” he added.
“I think retiring after playing on such a beautiful court against an opponent like him was the right decision. This is an ideal image that will forever remain in my memory,” Fognini concluded during a press conference.
