Golf legends Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy have partnered to introduce TGL, a groundbreaking golf league designed to offer fans a fresh and engaging viewing experience. This technology-driven league, in collaboration with the PGA Tour, presents a unique format where teams of elite golfers compete in a dynamic, close-quarters setting within a specially designed arena.
What is TGL Golf?
Established in August 2022, TGL, short for Tomorrow`s Golf League, is an innovative 3-on-3 golf league. It features six teams, each composed of four PGA Tour players, competing in two-hour matches at the SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. This venue is custom-built for TGL events.
Understanding TGL Matches
A TGL match consists of two sessions. The first session, known as “triples,” is a nine-hole, 3-on-3 alternate shot format. The second session is “singles,” featuring head-to-head play over six holes, with each golfer playing two holes.
- The SoFi Center course integrates advanced technology and spans approximately 97 yards by 50 yards, roughly the size of a football field.
- Golfers use real grass tee boxes, fairways, rough, and sand to hit shots onto a massive simulation screen, over 20 times larger than a standard golf simulator.
- The technologically advanced green incorporates jacks that adjust the slope, creating varied playing conditions on each hole.
- Each hole is worth one point, and ties after regulation are broken by an overtime.
- Overtime: TGL overtime is similar to a penalty shootout, with golfers competing head-to-head until a team places two shots closer to the pin than their opponents.
- Shot Clock: Matches include a 40-second shot clock. Players must take their shot within this time, or their team incurs a one-stroke penalty.
- The 40-second limit is based on the USGA`s pace of play recommendations.
- Timeouts: Each team gets four timeouts per match, with two per session. Timeouts do not carry over between sessions. Timeouts can be called until the shot clock expires for the team playing, and until the opposing player addresses the ball for the opposing team. Teams cannot call consecutive timeouts on the same shot.
- Referee: A referee enforces TGL rules on the course, with another official monitoring from a booth.
- All golfers are mic`d up during matches to enhance fan engagement.
TGL events are scheduled to complement the PGA Tour, as part of their partnership. Weekly matches lead to playoffs, culminating in the SoFi Cup championship.
TGL Points System
TGL`s points system is similar to the NHL, awarding points each regular-season match. Teams can earn up to two points per match, which determine their SoFi Cup standings.
A win in either regulation or overtime is worth two points, while an overtime loss earns one point.
The top four teams advance to the playoffs, featuring a single-elimination semifinal and a best-of-three championship series.
