Elena Dementieva Pinpoints Key Area for Coco Gauff’s Improvement

Sports news ยป Elena Dementieva Pinpoints Key Area for Coco Gauff’s Improvement

Olympic champion of 2008 and former world No. 3, Elena Dementieva, recently offered her expert opinion on the game of American tennis sensation Coco Gauff. Dementieva particularly highlighted Gauff`s exceptional physical conditioning, acknowledging it as a significant and often decisive strength in her matches.

Dementieva expressed some surprise regarding Gauff`s current training focus. “I was surprised that she started working with a serve coach,” Dementieva remarked, “because, in my opinion, she should concentrate more on improving her forehand. Physically, Coco is in magnificent shape, and that often saves her in matches. However, there are technical aspects that still require refinement.”

Addressing a common area of discussion, Dementieva noted that Gauff herself often mentions committing numerous double faults. Despite this, Dementieva observed that these errors are not always conspicuously evident during play, and crucially, Gauff consistently manages to win Grand Slam tournaments. This observation led Dementieva to question the root cause of these double faults: “When double faults do occur, the question arises: is it a psychological breakdown or a physical one? I wouldn`t say it`s an issue of technique.”

Dementieva`s comments were originally reported by We Love Tennis.

Looking ahead, Coco Gauff is scheduled to compete against fellow American Amanda Anisimova in the semifinals of the prestigious WTA 1000 tournament in Beijing.
