Dmitry Vasiliev Comments on Kasatkina’s Citizenship Change

Sports news » Dmitry Vasiliev Comments on Kasatkina’s Citizenship Change

Renowned biathlete Dmitry Vasiliev, a two-time Olympic champion, expressed his opinion regarding Daria Kasatkina`s decision to change citizenship.

Vasiliev was critical of Kasatkina`s statement that Australia has become her new homeland. He emphasized that a person can only have one homeland – the place of birth, and such statements, in his opinion, distort the concept of homeland. Vasiliev believes that Kasatkina may simply be carried away by the idea of collecting passports, and Australia cannot be considered her homeland. He expressed the view that Kasatkina does not realize the meaning of her words.

Vasiliev noted that many athletes have changed sports citizenship in the past, but eventually returned to Russia, which he calls their “true homeland.” He suggested that Kasatkina may also return in the future. In the event that she does not return, Vasiliev believes that it will not be a great loss for Russian sport, and no one will strongly regret her departure.

Vasiliev stated his disagreement with Kasatkina`s decision, emphasizing that for him, homeland is the highest value. He noted that he will always support his country, both in good times and in difficult times, because it is Russia that gave him everything and made him who he is. Vasiliev added that Kasatkina may still want to return to Russia, which he called a “truly democratic country,” unlike many other countries where, in his opinion, democracy is in decline.

Kostya Tszyu`s opinion on Kasatkina`s change of citizenship: “It is unknown what advantages she will receive. Australia has very high taxes.”
