Jack Della Maddalena, the recently crowned UFC welterweight champion, discussed the possible timeframe for a fight against lightweight titleholder Islam Makhachev.
Della Maddalena commented on the potential matchup, stating, “I don’t think anyone would mind if Islam gets a title shot. I’m sure for Shavkat [Rakhmonov], it’s an annoying situation, but that’s the essence of double championship — it obviously confuses the division. So, this shouldn’t happen all the time, but in Islam’s case, I think it makes sense.”
He added at the press conference, “We need to move the division forward. I hope that eight weeks after this fight, we will see a new title fight in the welterweight division.”
This discussion follows Della Maddalena`s victory yesterday, May 11, over Belal Muhammad in the main event of UFC 315 held in Montreal, Canada, securing him the welterweight title.
