Lucia Bronzetti, ranked No. 59 in the WTA rankings, started her campaign at the WTA 1000 tournament in Madrid with a significant win over former world No. 1 Naomi Osaka (6/4, 2/6, 6/4). This victory marks the Italian`s third win this season against a player who has held or currently holds the top spot in the world rankings.
Earlier this year, Bronzetti also defeated former world No. 1 Victoria Azarenka in the first round of the Australian Open and another former world No. 1, Simona Halep, in the first round of the WTA 250 tournament in Cluj-Napoca.
Bronzetti is currently tied with two other players for the most such victories on the Tour this season. Mirra Andreeva and Jelena Ostapenko have also recorded three wins against former or current world No. 1s (both Andreeva and Ostapenko have two wins over Iga Swiatek and one over Aryna Sabalenka).
