Giovanni van Bronckhorst has officially joined Arne Slot`s coaching setup at Liverpool.

The former Arsenal defender and Dutch compatriot is set to become an assistant coach for the Premier League champions. His appointment follows John Heitinga`s departure to take on the head coach role at Ajax.

The 50-year-old brings significant managerial experience, having previously managed several notable European clubs. He led Feyenoord from 2015 to 2019, securing the Eredivisie title in the 2016/17 season. He then spent a season with Rangers in 2021/22, winning the Scottish Cup and reaching the Europa League final, which they lost on penalties to Frankfurt. His most recent managerial position at Besiktas, starting in 2024, concluded in December 2024 after a run of four losses in six matches.

Van Bronckhorst also enjoyed a distinguished playing career. He is notably remembered for his time at Arsenal, where he won the FA Cup in 2003. Following a loan period, he made a permanent switch to Barcelona in 2004. During his tenure at the Camp Nou, he claimed the Champions League title in 2006 and won consecutive La Liga titles in 2005 and 2006.

He joins a Liverpool side that won the Premier League in the 2024/25 season, finishing with 84 points. Van Bronckhorst is expected to play a vital role in integrating potential new summer signings, such as Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong.

In related staff news for the 2025/26 season, Liverpool announced changes to their goalkeeper coaching team. Fabian Otte and Claudio Taffarel are set to depart. Their roles will be filled by the returning Xavi Valero, who has been appointed the new head goalkeeper coach. Valero previously worked at Liverpool under Rafa Benítez in 2007.
