World number 39 Anastasia Potapova commented on her first-round victory against Ashlyn Krueger at the Madrid tournament, where she won 6-7(7), 6-4, 6-2.
When asked how she managed to overcome her opponent after the match initially wasn`t going her way, Potapova responded: “I believe I managed to break her down by choosing the right tactics, and of course, thanks to my willpower and desire not to give up. It was about sticking to the plan we discussed with the team before the match, and that really worked throughout the match, especially on the return.”
Regarding Krueger, whom she had never played before, Potapova was asked if her opponent surprised her. She replied: “No, I hadn`t played her, but I watched many of her matches. Actually, she`s been quite talked about recently. She didn`t really surprise me because, basically, everything was expected. That she would serve well and strongly, especially given her height. That she would hit hard – that was also expected. That she wouldn`t like long rallies. So, in principle, nothing surprised me, but of course, I have to give her credit. I think with her physical attributes and game, she has every opportunity to break into the Top 10. I wish her that.”
